With less than six months until the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) TDUK has had many calls from members seeking clarity on the position in Northern Ireland. We have yet to receive any such clarity from the Government, but this Trade Note sets out our working assumption that companies trading timber in Northern Ireland should prepare now to be compliant with the EUDR by the year end.
While formal confirmation is pending, based on available information and the legal mechanisms of the Windsor Framework, it is reasonable to anticipate that the EUDR is likely apply in Northern Ireland once it comes into force at the end of 2025.
Given that, in theory, there are less than six months until the Regulation takes effect, many Member Companies have been in touch to ask what the position is and what action they should be taking. Our working position is that companies operating in or importing into Northern Ireland should begin preparing for EUDR compliance regardless of a formal Government announcement. This includes readiness to submit due diligence statements for relevant products via the TRACES system.
