About the project

The Armadillo Pavilion is a pioneering structure and the world’s first to use exposed eucalyptus cross-laminated timber (CLT), marking a significant advancement in mass timber construction. Fabricated from eucalyptus-sourced CLT panels, the structure pushes the boundaries of material use, celebrating the precision, strength, and sustainability of this fast-growing hardwood species. The sculptural form was digitally modelled and CNC-machined, enabling efficient offsite fabrication and rapid on-site assembly with minimal waste.

Designed for disassembly, the pavilion embodies circular construction principles. Its CLT components can be easily dismantled, transported, and reassembled, extending the life cycle of the material across multiple locations. The entire structure has no reliance on permanent fixings or finishes, showcasing the adaptability of CLT in demountable architecture.

Initially installed at Trinity Buoy Wharf in London, the pavilion has be relocated to Houghton Hall in Norfolk, where it serves as a permanent stage nestled within woodland. This project exemplifies how innovative CLT applications can deliver both architectural impact and environmental responsibility.
