Providing better connection between STEM disciplines, the design integrates a new three-storey teaching building and two-storey research block with existing buildings. These are arranged around a courtyard and cloister, providing active space for study, mentoring and exhibitions.
The school’s neo-classical Herbert Baker building has been opened at the rear with a timber extension, creating a connection between one side of the cloister and the Design and Technology building opposite. This consolidates the existing and new buildings to create a unified campus which facilitates a culture of interdisciplinary learning.
The new teaching building, containing biology and computational laboratories, is arranged in a three-storey linear block, extending one of the wings of the Herbert Baker building. Classrooms are located at either end of the block, allowing for windows on all three sides to maximise daylight and views. On the opposite side of the courtyard is a two-storey, top lit research block with a butterfly rooflight.
Formal teaching areas are blended with open, flexible spaces, designed to adapt to a multitude of teaching methods and activities. They have also been constructed with future adaptability in mind, ensuring they can evolve with changing educational needs.
Together, the SciTech buildings provide science laboratories, IT suites, robotics amenities and design and technology facilities, as well as a dedicated research centre and twenty teaching and seminar spaces.
The research centre is already home to several pioneering research projects including the prestigious Stan-X project, which enables Haileybury pupils to work on university-standard research alongside scientists at Stanford University and the University of Oxford.
