Summary

UPM timber and WISA® plywood are part of the larger UPM group. A Finnish materials solution company, UPM spans sectors including construction, packaging, transport, printing, publishing, textiles and others.

UPM has set a target to reduce the company’s CO₂ emissions by 65% by 2030, and the CO₂ emissions of sourced materials and logistics by 30%. These targets are in line with the goal of the Paris Agreement and are approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Key Information

UPM’s sustainability strategy is predicated on understanding the big picture: the effect each small action has on the whole. UPM aims to be transparent in the sustainability claims it makes: they must be fact-based, scientifically proven and documented. The company has an internal, corporation-wide learning package, allowing all employees to understand what can legitimately be said or claimed say from a sustainability point of view.

UPM Timber’s four current sawmills have been fossil-fuel-free since 2020. (The internal logistics of the sawmills operated by subcontractors are outside this scope and are included as part of the supply chain emissions calculation.) Production at the sawmills runs entirely on renewable energy, UPM Plywood achieved this target ahead of schedule in 2024.

For sourced materials and logistics, UPM Plywood has set out a Scope 3 emissions roadmap. It focuses on the large indirect emissions from resin production and transportation, product deliveries to customers and harvesting and log transportation to the mills, but also on smaller emission areas, such as coating production and transport and log yard contracting.
