Different wood-decaying organisms feed on wood and can deface or degrade timber. When damage is found, identifying which insects or fungi are responsible both informs the repairs required and the approaches for future prevention.
Timber cladding is often chosen to refresh elevations in refurbishment projects. It improves appearance and weather resistance, and acts as a rainscreen. If exterior insulation is added to a building to improve its thermal efficiency, timber cladding can protect it.
This report is based on a two-year ongoing research project focusing on cladding. There has been an increasing trend to use uncoated wood cladding as the exterior facade to new building projects, both domestic and commercial.
