Case Study: Timber Connection drives quality and productivity for Archwood Group

TDUK member Timber Connection explains how its strategic supply partnership with Archwood Group has helped the business deliver measurable gains in manufacturing efficiency.

In manufacturing, quality does not begin on the production line. It begins much earlier, with the materials chosen and the expertise of the partner supplying them.

As a specialist supplier, Timber Connection has spent more than 20 years supporting Archwood Group, home to leading UK brands including Richard Burbidge and Atkinson & Kirby. For a manufacturer of this scale, timber is more than just a raw material: it is the foundation of their reputation.

The challenge: Delivering consistency at scale

As a natural material, timber can vary in grain, colour, and moisture content. This means performance can differ from pack to pack, even within the same species. For a manufacturer like Archwood Group, that supplies both retail and trade merchant sectors, this variability introduces real operational pressures.

Inconsistent material can lead to increased waste, machine downtime, and production inefficiencies. When products must meet high visual and performance standards, these risks are significant. To remain competitive, manufacturers must improve efficiency and reduce waste while maintaining sustainability commitments and short lead times.

Technical collaboration

Rather than simply being about sourcing timber, the relationship between Timber Connection and Archwood Group is based on a deep understanding of the customer’s products, machinery, and end-user expectations.

What differentiates this partnership is the level of visibility between the two businesses. Open communication and shared forecasting allow both parties to plan ahead rather than react to issues as they arise. This ensures that the timber arriving on-site is not only compliant with the specification but is genuinely fit for purpose during production.

How the relationship works in practice

Day to day, Timber Connection supports Archwood Group through a combination of logistics and technical floor-level engagement.

By holding stock locally in the UK at Timber Connection’s Liverpool warehouse, Archwood is able to reduce on-site inventory while maintaining the ability to respond quickly to spikes in demand. When challenges occur regarding quality or specification, they are addressed collaboratively.

Timber Connection’s team regularly engages with Archwood’s production floor to understand how materials perform in real manufacturing conditions. A recent example involved a technical shift from American White Oak to European Oak for specific mouldings. By identifying that a different moisture content was required for the application, Timber Connection was able to help Archwood’s team eliminate surface cracking and significantly reduce rejects.

A measurable impact on productivity

The impact of this technical alignment is tangible. Through closer collaboration and improved material selection, Archwood Group has achieved yield improvements of more than 20% in certain areas of production.

This was also highlighted during a recent lean manufacturing project with Toyota, where material efficiency was a core focus. By ensuring timber is better matched to the manufacturing process, Timber Connection was able to help the client increase their yield from 60% to 80% in key areas, enhance overall productivity and workflow, and reduce machine downtime and material waste.

Shared values and long-term thinking

Beyond performance metrics, the partnership is underpinned by shared values of transparency and trust. Honest feedback and a long-term view of success have enabled continuous improvement for both businesses.

Sustainability also forms a core part of the conversation. Responsible sourcing, reducing waste, and improving material efficiency are treated as integral to the business, protecting both the environment and the supply chain’s longevity.

As Timber Connection continues to invest in global sourcing and technical expertise, the team is working hard to ensure its customers can invest in UK manufacturing with confidence.

This case study demonstrates that a strong supply chain is built on more than materials alone. It is built on trust, technical understanding, and a shared commitment to doing things properly.
