Does your business operate in Northern Ireland?

Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is currently undertaking an assessment on the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), and whether and how this legislation will be adopted in Northern Ireland (NI).

The EUDR is scheduled to come into force on 29 June, 2023, with an 18-24 month implementation preparation period. While the EUDR is specific to the EU and does not apply to the UK, it is currently uncertain whether the EUDR will replace the EU Timber Regulation in the Northern Ireland Protocol, and what implications this may have for timber businesses that operate and trade in Northern Ireland.

Timber Development UK believes that if the EUDR is introduced in Northern Ireland without adequate government support and equivalent regulations in Great Britain, this will have an adverse effect on trade between the two regions, potentially leading to a significant decline.

We are calling for interested members to get in touch with us to share any concerns they may have, or any specific examples of scenarios they could share with us, to support our efforts in lobbying the government to reconsider its position.
