designTimber – New Wave House

The designTimber 2026 series continues with New Wave House, winner of both the Commercial and Sustainability Awards at the 2025 Wood Awards.

This resourceful rooftop extension uses mass timber to add 495sqm of flexible workspace to the top of an existing light industrial building in North London.

Designed to rest on top of the existing building with minimal structural interventions, a lightweight, demountable Douglas fir glulam structure expands the available floor space by 40%.

New Wave House has prioritized resource efficiency and adaptive reuse wherever possible – with a significant portion of materials salvaged from other projects, and each part of the extension fabricated onsite in the contractor and client New Wave London’s joinery workshop.
