designTimber – Urban Nature Project

The designTimber 2026 series begins with the Urban Nature Project, Gold Winner of the 2025 Wood Awards.

Built using sustainable timber, local materials and thoughtful detailing, a visitor café and an education pavilion help to transform the gardens of the Natural History Museum into an oasis of urban nature.

Learn how these pioneering, low-energy buildings have been designed to have a positive impact on the environment and to inspire greater connection with nature. By using locally sourced, low-impact materials – including Douglas fir glulam, UK-grown solid timber and British limestone – the project is an exemplar of low embodied carbon construction that supports local supply chains and vernacular craft.

In this webinar, we will hear from project architect Matthew Glen (Feilden Fowles), structural engineer Chris Stobbart (engineersHRW) and specialist timber subcontractor Martin Self (Xylotek) and learn the story behind the UK’s best new timber building(s)!
