From a bespoke modular home and an innovative university centre to what is believed to be the largest UK-grown glulam structure ever built, this collection of buildings from the TDUK archives highlights the versatility and potential of homegrown timber in modern construction.


Across the UK, our forests and woodlands are a valuable national asset. When sustainably managed, they support biodiversity, enhance wellbeing, strengthen local economies, and provide a rich variety of materials. Hardwoods – such as oak, ash, sycamore, beech, chestnut, walnut and elm – and softwoods – including sitka spruce, Douglas fir and larch – offer exceptional potential across structural, interior and exterior applications.

Yet despite these natural advantages, the UK remains one of the least forested countries in Europe, with only 13% forest cover compared to the EU average of 37%. It is also the world’s second-largest net importer of timber products after China. UK-grown softwoods are increasingly used, although we do still need to improve specification of C16-graded timber. Our hardwood sector however is significantly underutilised, with only around 10% of harvested wood processed into sawn timber.

To unlock the full environmental and economic benefits of forestry, we must make better use of our domestic timber resources and support the planting and management of productive woodlands.

These case studies offer inspiration and practical insight. They demonstrate how UK-grown timber – across a spectrum of species, products and performance grades – can be used with confidence, beauty and innovation in a wide range of building types. From engineered timber and structural C16 to cladding, decking and fine joinery, these projects showcase not only what is possible today, but what could become standard practice in a more sustainable future.

Urban Nature Project

Howden Hall Road

Old School House

Old School House is a Grade-II listed home in Brue Valley, Somerset which has been sensitively extended with a homegrown chestnut-clad wing.

New Temple Complex

The New Temple Complex was designed by James Gorst Architects for the White Eagle Lodge, a multi-faith, nondenominational spiritual organization.

Lea Bridge Library Pavilion

The refurbishment and extension of Lea Bridge Library in East London has added an adaptable wood-lined community space and café, providing visitors with flexible spaces to work, learn and socialise.

Built using timber from the client’s woodland, the UK Hardwoods Storage Building is a remarkable example of local businesses working together to use timber in a sustainable and creative way.

The Hostry

Hopkins Architects has been involved in the design of new facilities at Norwich Cathedral for 14 years; the first phase of development, the Refectory, and the now-completed Hostry.

The Old Woodyard

Thomas and Sally Beevor gave a simple brief to Neil Winder of StudioMGM Architects. They wanted a new house to retire to. It needed to have a downstairs master bedroom, should accommodate their interests and be built using timber from the estate sawmill.

The Welcome Building

Glenn Howells Architects has designed a new visitor centre, the Welcome Building, which stands at the main entrance to the Westonbirt Arboretum, its curved timber roof acting as a landmark to visitors arriving at the new car and coach park

The Wood Chip Barn

Most timber used in buildings today is machined, glued and fabricated, creatingstandard products from what was a very non-standard element, a tree.

The Enterprise Centre

The Enterprise Centre, a new building on the University of East Anglia (UEA) campus, is an outstanding example of sustainability and low-embodied carbon construction. Completed in 2015, the building uses natural and bio-based materials sourced from local supply chains, including Norfolk thatch, recycled timber cladding and glulam columns of local larch.

Harmondsworth Barn

The Great Barn at Harmondsworth is the largest timber-framed medieval building in the country and one of the few surviving: a magnificent and remarkably preserved Grade I-listed building which is nearly a thousand years old.

David Douglas Pavilion

The David Douglas Pavilion, a small but innovative new building constructed almost entirely of Douglas fir, is the central feature of the Scottish Plant Collectors Garden at Pitlochry.

Assembly Workshop

A new workshop/shelter for project work at the Architectural Association's Hooke Park campus has been built and designed by the students themselves. The workshop is the latest in the collection of innovative timber buildings at Hooke Park.
