Join us for the University Design Challenge 2023 live finals!

Join us in Hereford on 14 July for the live finals of our 2023 University Design Challenge!

Held at the New Model Institute for Technology & Engineering (NMITE)’s Skylon Campus, you are invited to join us for either the awards and celebration from 5.30pm – 8pm, or to watch the live finals which start at 11.30am with a networking lunch, before the student teams present to our industry and academic judges.

The University Design Challenge is run by a coalition of organisations that support timber in construction, led by Timber Development UK (TDUK), and including BE-ST, NMITE, The Passivhaus Trust (PHT), Edinburgh Napier University (ENU), & the Association for Environment Conscious Building (AECB).

This year 70 students and recent graduates from 27 universities across the UK participated in the challenge. Joining one of 10 interdisciplinary teams of built environment students, they addressed the urgent need to reuse existing buildings by repurposing and retrofitting. The teams represent a variety of built environment skills including architecture, engineering, landscape architecture, quantity surveying and project management.

Retrofit is essential. It’s more challenging than new-build, and it takes a team of caring and skilled professionals to carry out the work. Our future professionals must grasp the complexity and embrace the constraints and challenges, and the University Design Challenge exists to give students the skills and understanding of how timber can play a central role.
