About the product

First things first – what is the difference between timber shakes and shingles? They may both be used in roofing and cladding, but the difference lies in their manufacturing.

Timber Shingles
Timber shingles are sawn on both sides and therefore have a smoother, more uniform look – perfect for modern applications. Being a sawn product they are cut across the cells of the timber which means they generally have a shorter lifespan.

Timber Shakes
Shakes are hand cleft down the grain which maintains the cell structure and results in a longer lifespan. Timber shakes are also generally thicker with a more textured appearance.

A natural and renewable resource, shakes are one of the most environmentally friendly and sustainable roofing or cladding materials. They also have good insulating properties – with the potential to have a positive impact on energy consumption. Whether you are involved in the restoration of a historic building or creating a contemporary new structure – timber shakes and shingles are a wonderfully versatile option for internal and external use on both domestic and public buildings.
