Showcasing Craftsmanship: A Landmark Transformation
A Carpenter Oak frame redefined the roof of a former department store in central London, becoming a striking feature in the thoughtful renovation by architects Squire and Partners. This stunning structure crowns the building with warmth and character, blending traditional materials with contemporary design.

Crafted from green oak, the frame forms spacious, light-filled areas. Large expanses of integrated glazing allow daylight to flood the bar, lounge, and restaurant, creating a welcoming ambiance. Guests can enjoy dining indoors or out, with seamless connections between social spaces and uninterrupted views across the London skyline.

Raising a Complex Frame Over Central London

Constructing this intricate frame atop a three-story building in London required precise planning and execution. The Carpenter Oak team overcame logistical challenges, including dismantling a crawler crane, lifting it to the rooftop, and reassembling it to position 50 tonnes of components.

The installation featured details like elegant colonnades and a dragon beam roof, topped with six-meter-wide room lanterns. The result is a space that combines technical achievement with natural beauty, demonstrating the skill and care invested in its creation.

Breathing New Life into a Historic Building

Originally built in 1876 as the UK’s first purpose-designed department store, this Edwardian building was revitalized by Squire and Partners after years of decline. The rooftop addition, with its expertly crafted frame, is a contemporary centerpiece that complements the building’s historic character.
