Summary

Characteristic values and design values demonstrate the strength characteristics of timber for construction purposes. They can be calculated through a mathematical formula set out in Eurocode 5.

Structural timber design involves choosing the dimensions of load-bearing members while considering material resistance, performance, and durability for the whole building.

This process is based on verification, the aim of which is to show that the requirements for the building materials, their dimensions, and use within the structural system have been met. Verification can be achieved by calculation or testing, or by a combination of the two.
