Summary

The Eurocodes form a set of documents developed to establish common structural design rules across the European Economic Area (EEA). The design procedure in Eurocode 5 (EC5) follows principles set out in BS EN 1990.

The Eurocode System introduced a design philosophy called Limit State Design. Structures are assessed at the service or working load condition, i.e. states beyond which the structure will no longer satisfy performance.

Introducing Limit State Design facilitates both everyday design as well as innovative, more complex design scenarios without being too onerous.
