The Eurocodes form a set of documents to establish common structural design rules across the European Economic Area (EEA). Structural timber design is covered in BS EN 1995 Design of Timber Structures, also known as Eurocode 5 or EC5. It includes design rules and requirements for strength, serviceability, durability, and fire resistance.
The Eurocode System is designed to ‘eliminate technical obstacles to trade and the harmonisation of technical specifications’ in construction within the EEA. It covers all main construction materials, including concrete, steel, masonry, timber, aluminium, and glass, as well as geotechnical design.
This common set of rules facilitates the free movement of construction materials and design professionals within the EEA.
