Summary
Growth rings, wood colour, and differences between earlywood and latewood all help to identify different species of softwoods.
In softwood anatomy, growth rings are often visible in the cross section, where there is a colour difference between earlywood and latewood.
The wood colour gives an early guide to which softwood species it is, with the presence of resin canals an additional indication.
