Eurocode 5, in section 6, gives the verifications to be conducted for design for flexure. Whereas BS 5268 relied on the engineer’s judgement to design for buckling, this latest standard includes verifications for lateral torsional buckling as well. The examples below explain how to design for flexure with detailed explanations given on the factors derived from Eurocode 5.
Design for flexure of solid timbers, glulam and LVL to Eurocode 5 is explained. Bending along stronger axis, bi-axial bending and bending about the stronger axis with applied axial compressive stresses are looked at. Detailed explanations on each of the parameters and factors involved are given.
