Eurocode 5, in clause 6.1.7, gives the verifications for design for shear for stress components parallel and perpendicular to grain. Clause 6.1.8 gives advice on design for torsion, based on shear strength of the section. This module outlines the theory behind with all factors and parameters explained.
At supports, the contribution to the total shear force of a concentrated load acting on the top side of the beam and within a distance h or hef from the edge of the support may be disregarded. For beams with a notch at the support this reduction in the shear force applies only when the notch is on the opposite side to the support.
