To harness the full environmental benefits of timber as a sustainable building material, it is essential that all timber products are responsibly sourced. Knowledge is a crucial element to making this a reality.
To enhance confidence and competence around responsible sourcing in the UK, TDUK has launched a new online CPD course, ‘Sourcing Timber Responsibly’, now available free to all our members via Wood Campus.
The course provides a clear introduction to responsible timber sourcing, helping everyone in the supply chain to understand their role in ensuring timber placed on the UK market meets rigorous environmental, social, and legal standards.
Topics covered include timber and deforestation, illegal logging, certification and chain of custody, due diligence, regulations, and more – core information relevant throughout the supply chain – whether you are an importer, merchant, architect or contractor.
Building knowledge for a sustainable future
“Responsible sourcing is at the heart of sustainable construction, and this course provides a strong starting point for anyone who wishes to learn the core principles,” said Xiao Ma, Sustainability Manager at TDUK.
“Timber is set to play a central role in our transition to a low-carbon built environment, so it is vital that everyone who works in the built environment sector feels confident and competent in sourcing and specifying timber responsibly.
“By improving knowledge across every profession which touches timber – whether you are a supplier, a specifier, or any point in between – we are creating a far stronger, more resilient supply chain, able to ask the right questions.”
After completing ‘Sourcing Timber Responsibly’, learners will be able to:
- Understand the fundamentals of timber legality and sustainability.
- Recognise the role and importance of third-party certification.
- Understand legal and government requirements for timber in the UK.
- Know how to specify and procure legal and sustainable timber effectively.
Undertaken through six concise modules and a short assessment, participants will in this course gain practical knowledge to support compliance and responsible practice throughout their work – all in the time it takes to have a lunch break.

This new CPD forms part of TDUK’s commitment to raising competence, promoting education, and advancing responsible sourcing across the timber industry – primarily through our Responsible Purchasing Policy (RPP) System.
You can access the Sourcing Timber Responsibly module anytime, available via Wood Campus through your regular log-in details. It is now one of the key modules for the Essentials of Timber Supply Level Two, our flagship programme for timber suppliers.
