All materials have an embodied carbon value, which reflects the emissions from all stages of production, use and end of life. This data is normally captured in the form of a verified EPD (Environmental Product Declaration).
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardised (often voluntary) document that provides detailed information about the environmental impacts of a product throughout its lifecycle. It is based on the principles of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and follows international standards. For construction products in Europe, the European standard EN 15804 provides the format and methodology.
Manufacturers, buyers, and regulators utilize EPDs to comprehend and evaluate the environmental effects of various products. They can support environmental rules and policies, help educate on green building certifications, and facilitate the formulation of more sustainable decisions.
An EPD can help a business achieve its sustainability objectives, strengthen its position in the market, and cultivate a favorable reputation among stakeholders and customers, this through corporate image, brand loyalty, meeting market demands, and generating credibility.
Among carbon total stored carbon, total excluded biogenic carbon and total included biogenic carbon. EPD’s have a detailed description of the product, including its name, model, and intended use, manufacturers information: Name, address, and contact information of the manufacturer.
Biogenic carbon is included in Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for timber in order to appropriately represent the unique environmental benefits of timber as well as its part in the carbon cycle. Trees take in CO2 and store it in their biomass as biogenic carbon. This carbon is kept in timber products for the duration of their existence, which contributes to the measurement of the advantages of using wood for carbon sequestration.
Including biogenic carbon data provides a balanced perspective of the carbon footprint of the product by capturing all carbon flows, including emissions during the processing, use, and disposal of timber as well as sequestration during tree growth.
At the end of their life, timber products can release stored carbon if decomposed or burned, which EPDs must account for. Timber recycling and reuse can extend carbon storage, and EPDs document these benefits, promoting sustainable practices. Compliance with regulatory and certification standards, along with market demand for transparent reporting, further necessitates the inclusion of biogenic carbon in EPDs.
EPD data provides specifiers with the information and resources they need to make sustainable decisions, carry out comprehensive lifecycle evaluations, and effectively interact with stakeholders and clients. This improves the sustainability of individual projects and supports larger initiatives to lessen the building industry’s environmental impact.
