Phil Marshall, Pfeifer Group’s Area Sales Director – UK & Ireland, tells TDUK how the business has evolved, and why the UK has become such a key focus within Pfeifer’s international strategy.
For many years, TDUK member Pfeifer Group has been a familiar name within the European timber sector, recognised for its breadth of product range and long-standing family ownership. Across Central and Northern Europe, Pfeifer has built a reputation as a business that combines scale with consistency, and modern production with a deep respect for timber as a finite and valuable resource.
In recent years, that established European presence has taken on a more tangible shape in the UK. Through a combination of strategic acquisition, targeted investment and a clear commitment to closer market engagement, Pfeifer has signalled its intent to play a more active and long-term role in the UK timber supply chain.
From continental supplier to local presence
Historically, Pfeifer’s relationship with the UK market was built on supply from its Central European operations. While this provided access to well-established spruce and processed timber products, the company also recognised that the market was changing. Customers were looking for broader choice, shorter lead times and a greater reassurance of supply, as well as a stronger emphasis on sustainability and provenance.
A pivotal moment for the business came with Pfeifer’s acquisition of the northern Finnish wood processor, Pölkky. The move significantly expanded the group’s product portfolio, bringing high-quality sawn timber and northern Finnish pine into the portfolio.
“Since the acquisition of Pölkky, we have been able to offer our customers not only our established Central European qualities, but also high-quality sawn timber from Northern Europe, especially northern Finnish pine,” explains Phil Marshall. “That expansion of range naturally led us to think differently about how we serve the UK market.”
Northern Finnish pine is widely valued for its strength, consistency and performance, attributes that align closely with growing UK demand for reliable, premium softwood products.
The result was the establishment of Pfeifer Timber UK Ltd, complete with a dedicated sales operation and warehouse facility in Goole, Yorkshire. For Pfeifer, this marked a decisive shift from being primarily an overseas supplier to becoming a business with a strong on-the-ground presence in the UK.
“This local structure greatly strengthens our market presence,” Phil says. “It allows us to deliver more quickly, respond more flexibly, and work much more closely with our UK partners. The first few months have already shown that this proximity allows us to provide a completely new level of performance.”
Why the UK matters
The UK’s importance to Pfeifer is rooted in both scale and opportunity. As one of Europe’s largest timber-importing markets, the UK plays a central role in international timber flows. At the same time, it is a market experiencing ongoing change, shaped by supply volatility, regulatory pressure and shifting customer expectations.
“The UK is one of the most important and dynamic timber markets in Europe,” Phil notes. “Placing a stronger focus here was a logical step within our international strategy.”
Pfeifer’s positioning within the UK supply chain is closely tied to its ownership of production. As a group with its own sawmills, engineered timber plants and processing facilities, Pfeifer is able to plan long-term and maintain stable access to raw material. That capability has taken on greater importance as UK traders look for partners who can offer continuity as well as quality.
“We see ourselves as a strong and reliable partner that brings stability and long-term planning capability to a supply chain that is increasingly characterised by volatility,” Phil explains. “Our mission is to give customers confidence, not just in the products themselves, but in the entire supply chain behind them.”
Product breadth and logistical strength
One of Pfeifer’s USPs is its integrated approach to timber processing. Across its European sites, the group works to maximise the value of every inch of raw material, with material flows designed to support a broad and complementary product range. Sawn timber, planed goods, panels, pellets, briquettes and bioenergy all form part of a closed-loop system that underpins both economic efficiency and environmental responsibility.
For the UK market, this translates into access to a diverse portfolio that includes premium northern Finnish pine, Central European spruce and a growing range of engineered wood products. The presence of a UK warehouse adds another layer of flexibility, reducing lead times and supporting more responsive delivery patterns.
“With the warehouse in Goole, we can react quickly to market developments and offer a service built on proximity, speed and delivery performance,” says Phil. “That combination of product range, logistics and integrated processing sets us apart.”
Demand trends in the UK have reinforced this approach. According to Phil, customers are placing greater emphasis on consistency, sustainability and dependable supply relationships, rather than short-term opportunistic buying.
“Demand is clearly shifting towards reliable, sustainably sourced and consistently high-quality supply,” he says. “Through the integration of Pölkky and ongoing investment in our mills, we are well placed to meet those expectations.”
Building partnerships, not transactions
Despite its international scale, Pfeifer places strong emphasis on personal relationships. In the UK, that means regular engagement with merchants and manufacturers, supported by a balance of digital efficiency and face-to-face consultancy.
“We prioritise long-term relationships,” Phil explains. “Our ambition is not only to supply products, but to accompany our partners as a service provider and trusted advisor.”
That partnership-led approach also extends to sharing market insight, technical knowledge and international perspective. For UK customers, working with Pfeifer brings access to a wider network and a broader understanding of how timber markets are evolving across Europe.
“Working with Pfeifer always includes access to expertise and background knowledge,” Phil adds. “It’s about supporting our partners to make informed decisions, not just fulfil orders.”
Sustainability as standard practice
Sustainability sits at the heart of Pfeifer’s business model, rather than being treated as an add-on or marketing message. The group’s closed wood cycle, with 100% utilisation of raw material, underpins both its environmental credentials and its operational efficiency.
From sawn timber through to energy products such as pellets and briquettes, every output has a defined purpose. The addition of a waste-wood recycling facility in Uelzen further strengthens this circular approach, allowing recovered material to be reintegrated into production streams.
“Sustainability is a core element of our corporate identity,” Phil says. “It’s lived across all levels of the organisation and continuously developed.”
For UK customers navigating increasing scrutiny around environmental, social, and governance frameworks, certification and carbon reporting, that embedded approach is designed to provide reassurance. Full traceability, from forest to UK delivery, is supported by digitalised systems and extensive certification across both Pfeifer and Pölkky operations.
“Every batch can be tracked from forest through to delivery to our UK warehouse,” Phil confirms. “That level of transparency is increasingly important for our partners.”
Supporting growth in engineered timber
Looking ahead, Pfeifer sees strong potential in the UK’s growing interest in engineered timber solutions. Products such as CLT and glulam are gaining traction across residential, education and public-sector projects, driven by sustainability goals and the UK’s changing construction methods.
As one of Europe’s leading manufacturers in this space, Pfeifer brings both capacity and technical expertise. The group is preparing to support UK projects more actively, aligning its engineered timber offer with evolving market requirements.
“We see significant growth potential in this segment,” Phil notes. “Our focus is on being ready to support that demand with reliable production and proven know-how.”
Confidence in uncertain times
The UK timber sector continues to face challenges, from price volatility to regulatory change and logistical pressure. Pfeifer’s response is rooted in planning, inventory management and open communication.
“Our aim is to provide security, even in difficult market phases,” Phil explains. “High inventory levels, stable production capacity and reliable delivery performance all play a role in that.”
Looking three to five years ahead, Pfeifer expects quality, sustainability and supply stability to become even more decisive factors. The company plans to continue expanding its UK presence, broadening its product offer and investing in both people and infrastructure.
“Our goal is to act as a driver of joint growth,” Phil says. “We want to offer partners long-term stability and the confidence to plan ahead.”
A family business mindset
Underlying all of Pfeifer’s activity is its identity as a third-generation, family-run business. That long-term outlook shapes decision-making, investment strategy and customer relationships.
“Reliability, continuity and responsible use of resources are core elements of who we are,” Phil reflects. “We see every business relationship as a partnership built on trust and shared values.”
As Pfeifer continues to embed itself within the UK market, that mindset, combined with tangible local investment, positions the group as a supplier focused not just on growth, but on building lasting value for the wider timber industry.
