The TreeThe average height of the tree is 30m but in some areas may reach 40m and a diameter of 1.2m. Under favourable conditions the bole is clear for about 15m.
The TimberThere is no distinction by colour between sapwood and heartwood, the wood being pale yellowish-white when freshly cut, turning to pale brown when dried. It is a soft, compact wood, with a fine, uniform texture, and a straight grain. It weighs about 560 kg/m3 when dried.
DryingDries fairly rapidly, and reasonably well with a slight tendency to distort.
StrengthLimited tests have indicated the general strength properties of lime to be similar to those of oak, but the principal uses for the wood are based more on its ability to resist splitting, together with its softness, rather than on general strength.
Working QualitiesGood - Works readily and easily, but is inclined to be woolly, and requires thin-edged, sharp tools in order to effect a smooth finish. It takes nails, stain and polish very satisfactorily, turns well, and carves extremely well.
