“Only one earth” – World Environment Day 2022

"Only one earth" - World Environment Day 2022

“#OnlyOneEarth advocates for transformative environmental change on a global scale. The campaign shines a spotlight on climate action, nature action and pollution action while encouraging everyone, everywhere to live sustainably,” World Environment Day.

This year’s World Environment Day – “Only One Earth”- is on Sunday 5th June, with the focus on “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature”.

“Only One Earth” was the slogan for the 1972 Stockholm Conference – now fifty years on, and this is more necessary than ever – this earth is our only home and actions must be implemented and strengthened.

“Only One Earth” was the slogan for the 1972 Stockholm Conference. We are now fifty years on, and the message behind is more necessary than ever; this earth is our only home and actions must be implemented and strengthened to safeguard our environment.

Sustainable timber is a proven, realistic solution for preserving, growing, and extending global forests, and is based on existing quickly scalable business models and proven technology.

Using more wood in the built environment, including furniture and interiors, is a natural, cost-effective, and sustainable carbon-capture solution – as once managed forests are harvested, they are replanted or allowed to regenerate naturally, and carbon sequestration continues.

“By building more using sustainable timber, we can improve construction practices, lower carbon emissions, improve health outcomes, and deliver improved ecological outcomes,” David Hopkins, Chief Executive of Timber Development UK.

Wood is the only sustainable structural material that grows worldwide that can enable substantial decarbonisation of the built environment, based on existing business models and proven technology. This provides vast carbon sinks in our rural areas and carbon stores in our cities.

Increased investment in sustainable timber also provides viable income for local communities and creates incentives for sustainable forest management, preventing deforestation and encouraging conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Forests need to be managed sustainably and measures put in place to ensure a steady supply of forest materials, which benefits the livelihoods of indigenous people, local communities and the producer country putting in place such reforms. Strong legal governance in the forest and throughout international supply chains underpins these objectives.

The environment of our “Only One Earth”, needs to be safeguarded against illegal and lucrative trade/production for natural resources. The call to action of “Global Forests need Global Governance” is a policy to incentivise legal and governance reform to ensure long-term forest sustainability and growth.

By putting in place policies and measures to strengthen governance and ensure legal and clean supply chains, the timber industry and trade are improving producer countries’ GDP, delivering improved ecological outcomes within the forest, raising the living standards and improving health among local populations. In addition, this all works to maintain and grow tree cover, underpinning the tropical forest’s vital role in climate regulation and supporting biodiversity.

We have “Only One Earth”. Let’s start now to make the changes vital for the future of the environment and our planet that we all depend on.
