Government House Building Target and Planning System Changes (July 2024):
The government announced that its housing target will be increased from 300,000 to 370,000 net additional homes per year and that it will be made mandatory. It also proposed substantial changes to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), now out to consultation, and broader changes to the planning system in England.
The majority of the focus following the announcement was on the housing target itself and the regional distribution of the housing target. However, there were also positive proposed changes to planning around infrastructure, including public service infrastructure (such as schools, hospitals and prisons) and private commercial and industrial (such as data centres and gigafactories), as well as changes to planning for some home improvements (upward extensions including mansards).
