Please note that the following timber-related amendment proposals have been submitted to the upcoming 20th meeting of the CITES Conference of the Parties (CoP20), which will take place in Uzbekistan from 24th November to 5th December 2025.
There are currently proposals concerning four timber species:
- Brazilwood (Paubrasilia echinata) – A proposal submitted by Brazil seeks to transfer this species from Appendix II to Appendix I, which would prohibit all international trade, except under very limited and strictly regulated circumstances.
- African Coralwood (Pterocarpus soyauxii) and Red Doussie (Afzelia bipindensis) – These two African timber species are proposed for removal (deletion) from Appendix II for a number of African countries. This would remove CITES trade controls, thereby easing the regulatory burden for sustainable commercial trade.
- Parlatore’s Podocarp (Podocarpus parlatorei) – This species is proposed to be downlisted from Appendix I to Appendix II, which would allow for controlled international trade under specific conditions. This species has been listed in CITES Appendix I since 1975 and there has been no international trade in the species since that date.
