Are you keeping your timber stocks safe?

With hot weather becoming a staple of 2025, and as the percentage of Redwood timber being delivered to builders’ merchants is rising, the way we handle and store timber is under greater scrutiny than ever before. For builders’ merchants and site managers alike, keeping timber in prime condition is no longer just good practice – it’s a necessity.

When at its best, timber is a beautiful and versatile material. But it’s also vulnerable to external weather conditions. When handled improperly, stored carelessly or left exposed during transport, it can quickly lose the qualities that make it so desirable.

Protect against moisture

Moisture remains timbers biggest adversary. Even the best-quality timber, delivered in perfect condition, can be rendered unfit for use if its moisture content shifts significantly before installation. Swelling, shrinking, cracking, and fungal growth are common outcomes of such shifts, compromising everything from structural integrity to appearance. That’s why checking the moisture content at the point of delivery should always be a first step. If it doesn’t meet the specifications, it should be flagged immediately.

Freshly plastered rooms or newly concreted floors can present hidden dangers to timber. The high levels of ambient moisture in such environments may go unnoticed until the timber stored in the room begins to warp or split. Storing timber in a garage or shed with good airflow or, when on site, ideally waiting until the building has properly dried out, is a safer alternative when indoor storage is necessary but unfinished construction prevents proper environmental control.

Keep your timber covered

The place where timber is stored also plays a crucial role in protecting its performance. Ideally, timber products should be stored indoors – in the same building they’ll eventually be used in. But when that’s not an option, good temporary covering and careful planning are essential.

Timber stored outdoors must be kept off the ground, away from pooling water and splashing from guttering or nearby traffic. It should also be protected by a waterproof covering that still allows air to circulate. A breathable tarpaulin, suspended so it doesn’t touch the wood itself, can provide the necessary balance between shelter and ventilation. Elevation matters too: stacks should sit on bearers or pallets to keep them dry and evenly supported. Even small details, such as making sure coverings don’t trap condensation or ensuring air can pass between the boards, can make a critical difference.

Of course, not all timber is created equal – and neither is the way it should be handled. Carcassing timber, though more robust, still benefits from thoughtful storage. A flat, dry surface layered with gravel or sand can help prevent water retention. Stacking on evenly sized bearers reduces the risk of warping as conditions change.

For joinery items and factory-finished products such as doors and windows, the stakes are even higher. These are often delivered ready to install and pre-wrapped to protect precise finishes. They should remain wrapped until they are needed and be stored vertically, ideally in a dry, ventilated space that mirrors the environment they’ll be installed in. A shed with heating control or a dried-out interior room is best, with care taken not to damage ironmongery during storage.

Sheet materials present their own challenges. These timbers must be stored flat, on bearers no more than 600mm apart, and always kept off the ground. Boards thinner than 6mm will need extra support underneath and, when stockpiling large quantities, breaking them into smaller, evenly stacked batches can prevent bowing and distortion. For interior-grade sheets, outdoor storage is never acceptable. When using factory finished and speciality sheet materials indoors, they should be stored as described for a minimum of 48 hours in the dried-out building they are going to be fixed in, so that they’ve adjusted to the environment and won’t shrink or expand once installed.


Managing larger timbers

Then there are the bulkier items, such as roof trusses, I-joists, and timber frame panels. These are often delivered direct to site in large quantities, and so timing becomes critical. Ideally, they should arrive just before they are due for installation. If that’s not possible, then they need to be stored carefully: trusses, for example, should be supported at their nodes, never left resting on their metal plates, and always lifted at the correct fixing points.

Once assembled on site, they should be covered promptly to protect against exposure. Timber frame panels, similarly, need to be stacked side-up on level bearers and kept shielded from both rain and excessive sun.

Certified timber products, especially those requiring chain-of-custody verification, should be stored separately to maintain easy identification and traceability. If you’re responsible for managing these materials on site or in branch, ensure certification is up to date and that they’re protected in line with the same stringent storage standards applied to all other products.

Protecting timber during transport

Transporting timber introduces another set of risks. A flatbed truck may seem like a simple solution, but cleanliness and dryness are essential before loading. Timber should be secured using non-abrasive ratchet straps, with padding to prevent marks or indentations. Over-tightening is a common mistake; while it may seem to offer security, it can actually damage the timber’s surface or even its internal structure. Protecting timber from the elements during transit is also crucial. A breathable, waterproof tarp will prevent rain and UV exposure from taking their toll, but airflow is, again, vital to prevent trapped condensation from undermining your efforts.

Even the journey itself matters. Poor road conditions and long distances can cause vibration damage and movement within the load. Careful route planning, moderate speeds, and suspension-equipped vehicles help to mitigate these risks. For valuable deliveries, tracking shipments can also be useful – not just for security but for monitoring conditions and timing.

Loading and unloading requires the same level of care. Mechanical aids like forklifts should always be used for heavy packs to prevent drops, chips, or unnecessary handling strain. And stacking timber once it’s on site should be done with the same diligence as in the yard. Don’t forget the basics – taking pieces from the top of a stack, not halfway through, will help prevent collapses, injury and stock damage.

And, of course, none of this works without good organisation. Keep your timber well labelled and logically arranged so it’s easy to find and handle without unnecessary rummaging or reshuffling. Rotate your stock regularly, using older timber first to avoid product loss from degradation over time. Make sure your team understands, too – every person who handles timber should know and work with these storage and transport principles.
