About the product

Brimstone is a thermally modified timber product entirely produced, designed, and manufactured in the UK – using locally grown woods to create an attractive, durable timber solution for outdoor use.

Created by the team from Vastern Timber, Brimstone allows for a relatively knot-free hardwood cladding which brings both quality and performance to any application – whether for cladding, decking or joinery.

By simply applying heat, thermal modification changes the cell structure of wood to remove moisture, resin and other extractives. The result is a highly dependable material which lends beauty and durability to any timber project.
Brimstone cladding can be made using ash, sycamore, or poplar – all commercially available, sustainable hardwoods grown in the UK. Each species selection brings its own aesthetic and performance properties:

– Brimstone Ash Cladding is the strongest of the three options, and is fast, stable and relatively knot-free.
– Brimstone Poplar Cladding is lightweight, stable and durable, comparable to the likes of Canadian Cedar.
– Brimstone Sycamore Cladding offers high performance as a stable and durable hardwood with low knot content.

Every time you specify Brimstone for your project, you help preserve UK woodlands for future generations. By using sustainable UK timber, your project helps support tree planting and to increase biodiversity.

Thermal modification is a tried and tested means of increasing the performance of timber – and testing in labs has established it has a service life of up to 60 years – all without the use of chemicals.

It also helps reduce the carbon emissions of your project. Transport is a major contributor to the embodied carbon of wood products. Brimstone is all grown in England and Wales, usually within less than 100 miles of our sawmill.
