Summary
Unlike softwoods, hardwood anatomy includes transport vessel cells, to move sap and air through the tree.
Hardwoods contain a variety of specialised cell types. These include libriform fibres and fibre tracheids that form the main part of the wood structure, vessels specialised in sap transport, and parenchyma cells for storage.
