In 2020, VELUX launched its 2030 sustainability strategy. One of its many goals – which include promotion of a circular economy and the reduction of the company’s Stage 1 and 2 carbon emissions – was to remove all plastic from its packaging and make it 100% recyclable by 2030.

VELUX has begun to move away from plastic packaging (EPS – expanded polystyrene) towards responsibly sourced paper and cardboard, and using paper tape too.

Switching from plastic to paper-based packaging required a great deal of preparation across several years. VELUX began developing the new plastic-free packaging in 2021, involving design professionals, engineers, and production companies from across the VELUX organisation.

The main challenge was that the paper-based packaging has to deliver the same level of protection and performance as the previous EPS.
