Construction timber in the UK is predominantly coniferous wood, made up of UK production representing around 35% and imports representing around 65% of the UK’s total requirements.

Coniferous forestry uses a range of timber species. European Whitewood (Spruce) and European Redwood (Pine) are the most dominant species groups in Northern and Central Europe and, therefore, represent the majority of imports to the UK. 

However, there are significant changes taking place in the available log supplies for Northern and Central Europe. 

It is important to note that we do not expect this to have a dramatic overall effect on the volume of construction timber available to the UK construction market. It is likely, however, that it will restrict the range of lengths and sizes available.
